The group was established in 2004 and has since become a recognised environmental group in Forbes.  Forbes is identified as a re-settlement town to many Aboriginal families and is located in the heart of Wiradjuri country. It has an abundance of cultural heritage sites throughout its landscape and is located on the “Kalare” Lachlan River.

The water ways played an important part in traditional Aboriginal life and today in Forbes the river, lake and other water contributory still have a strong connection to the Aboriginal people.

The Forbes Aboriginal Environmental Group plays host to the annual Forbes Carpathon that attracts over 1000 children every year. This event is held on the second Sunday in November, which enables European Carp to be removed before distributing their eggs. This also has major benefits to the native fish in Lake Forbes.

The group provides a Cultural Heritage day during the Forbes Heritage Week festival held in May every year. Last year event included a bus tour around Forbes looking at modified trees, old Aboriginal mission site, repatriation site and concluded activities for the children whilst adults were treated to a great bush tucker luncheon.

The group has also been instrumental in promoting Aboriginal Cultural Heritage into School through providing high school students with an opportunity to canoe along the Lachlan River looking at issue effecting NRM and Cultural heritage.
