West Wyalong is situated at the intersection of the Newell and Mid Western Highways approx. 486kms west of Sydney. The original occupants of the land were the Wiradjuri people. The first European in the area was John Oxley in 1817, on one of the first inland explorations. Squatters began to settle in the district in 1833, However, no centralised settlement developed until 1893 when Joseph Neeld discovered gold on a family property. Wyalong became a municipality in 1899. By the end of the century Wyalong was reported as one of the most productive gold fields in the state. During the rush mixed farming developed and the Wyalong district became the largest cereal growing centre in NSW. Eucalyptus oil production began in 1907 and Wyalong became one of the major world exporters of the product. According to the 2006 census there are approximately 100 Aboriginal people in West Wyalong (3.% of the total population). The West Wyalong Local Aboriginal Land Council (WWLALC) currently has 50 voting members and play an active part in the recognition and preservation of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage (ACH) within the West Wyalong district. The WWLALC works closely with the schools in particular during NAIDOC celebrations, educating students on the importance of ACH recognition and protection. The WW LALC's CEO – Leeanne Hampton is currently the Secretary of LANRMC, we also have two other Aboriginal community members who are members of the LRAMG. WWLALC has recently formed an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Group and with the assistance, guidance and knowledge gained from our association with the LANRMG and LRAMG hope to begin some on ground work projects funded by the Lachlan CMA to protect ACH and incorporate Natural Resource Management (NRM) practices. In conjunction with the Bland Shire Council, the first project we are hoping to initiate is a revamp on the existing Cooinda Park Bushwalk. This will include, revegetation, planting of native bush tucker, signage and art work. The proposed outcome of this project is to establish a recognisable Aboriginal connection to country, and to educate the broader community in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage. The Aboriginal community of West Wyalong in particular the members and staff of the WWLALC endeavor to promote recognition, acceptance and protection of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage, and aims to build strong, long lasting relationships amongst the broader community.
